Windows 98 Quit Working. Can You Help Me?

Submitted by admin on October 8, 2009 – 2:19 am17 Comments

A couple of weeks ago Windows 98 quit working for me. The splash screen comes up, windows starts to load, the background appears and so does the cursor. Nothing happens after that. I’m pretty sure that spyware off the internet attacked the registry. I say this because I can get into windows using “safe mode.” I want to know if there’s anything I can do to fix the registry (without a floppy drive….the drive doesn’t work).

I would suggest getting something a little newer.. Who still uses Windows 98?

  • Christopher R says:

I think it’s really too late for 98. Think about it: the thing is 8 years old, which is genuinely antique in computer terms. Too many things you might try to do on the Internet won’t work right on 98. My guess is you were having trouble with some of the functions of Yahoo! Answers, weren’t you? I was, until I upgraded to XP.
Sorry, Honey, but I’m afraid there’s not much else you can do.

You have 2 options, you can try and reformat, or you can upgrade. I would suggest the upgrade, not much supports 98 anymore.

the OS is 8 years old.
thats like dinosaur turned to oil in IT years.
    get xp at the least,

  • seanachi says:

Windows 98 is no longer supported by Yahoo! Answers. Consider Linux.

  • blue2mon says:

Go into safe mode and load a spyware cleaner from cd. Or reinstall Win 98. Or better yet, as the previous person said, upgrade.

  • L3-knigh says:

I WOULD GET AN UPGRADE. WINDOWS 98 REALLY ISN’T SUPPORTED ANYMORE.

  • Technici says:

    restart

  • awommack says:

    Upgrade

  • Up your Maslow says:

thats easy get XP or 2003 98 sucks.

There may be hope yet. If you can get to the internet in safe mode download yahoo’s free antispy tool and run it in safe mode. Also, do an in depth scan of your computer using your computers current anti-spyware and anti-virus tools. After you do that go into the windows regestry by typing in “regedit” (w/o quotes in the run command…
    Go to these regestry enteries:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoft…
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftW…
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoft…
*and delete all enteries that are there*
(if there is an entery that can’t be deleted called default that’s fine…)
After you do that reboot your computer and see what happens…
If that doesn’t work go back to safe mode and go to start > run…
    type msconfig…
In the msconfig window go to the tab startup. Uncheck all the options that are there. then reboot your machine in normal mode. If it doesn’t work then, your computer can still be fixed but it’s more complicated…
People don’t really know this but there is a system restore in widnows 98 like there is in windows Me and XP…
If you want to know more you can email me at andy.compwhiz@verizon.net… k?
    Good Luck…
    Andy…

  • Chris™ says:

    run>cmd
    type format c:
all ur problems will be done
go open source try GNULinux for a change
SuSE 10.X is really cool go for it

  • iWasCool says:

The truth is that Microsoft no longer supports, or puts updates out for Win 98. You’re better off going out and finding someone really nice that has a copy of Win XP or some such operating system that you can put onto your computer. If you want my opinion, to stay away from the spyware and the viruses that are caught on windows computers, switch to Mac. OS X is just as easy to use as windows… and every bookstore carries a copy of “OS X for dummies.”

  • Dani D says:

Ok, a fairly newbie without the internet or floppy with a defective case of Windows 98…
    1. Reformat and reload Windows from a CD.
    2. Scrap Windows 98 and go with a newer OS
    3. Fix the floppy drive or replace it.
    I’d go with #2
